For some, clothes retaining a negative odor after they come out of the dryer can be a significant issue. In certain cases, this can be a result of an issue with the drier itself. In others, it can be due to a problem with the washer. Here are some of the common causes of clothes that come out of the dryer with an odor.

Air Flow

The way a basic dryer works is by pulling air in to help dry the clothes, usually from the bottom of the dryer. When this is happening, there might be times where a negative odor is pulled from outside the machine and reaches the clothes themselves.

Fresh Paint

In other cases, if the area around the dryer has been freshly painted, this could be the odor that ends up being pulled in by the dryer as it attracts air. In these cases, the smell can become infused into the clothes.

Tumbler and Ducting

If neither of the above is the issue, consider checking to make sure both the tumbler and the ducting in the dryer are clean. Dirt and debris here can be the source of odor.

Washer Issues

In other cases, issues with the washer itself will be the source of a negative odor when clothes come out of the dryer. These issues might include:

• Too much detergent or the wrong detergent
• Built up scum in the washer – can be cleaned using bleach
• Leaving wet clothes in the dryer too long – can cause a moldy smell
• Overuse of dryer sheets or other products
